How to know if your building needs to tune-up

Covered buildings list

To check if your building is covered by the Building Energy Savings Program (BESP) and needs to benchmark, check the Covered Buildings List of the Madison BESP Official Website. The Initial Tune-up year for your building will be visible on this list.

Covered building sizes

All non-residential, commercial buildings with floor space of at least 50,000 square feet (sq. ft) must complete a Building Tune-up every four years. The program will be phased-in over three years starting in 2026:

Large buildings:

>100,000 square feet

2026

(early-bird submission from 2025)

Medium buildings:

50,000 - 99,999 square feet

2027

Small buildings:

25,000 - 49,999 square feet

Not required
